Meet Our New Executive Director
Barb Mayfield has assumed the position of executive director of Butterfield Youth Services following John Carton. She is a native of southeast Missouri, having moved to Marshall from Cape Girardeau. Mayfield received an AA degree from St. Paul's College in Concordia. She earned an undergraduate degree in secondary education and a master's degree in education with an emphasis in guidance and coundeling from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Barb has worked in the not-for-profit sector since 1983. She was the director of a domestic violence shelter for women and children in Cairo, Illinois. At Family Learning Center (FLC) in Cape Girardeau, Barb was the clinical director. FLC held contracts with Missouri Children's Division and with Missouri Department of Mental Health to provide a therapeutic preschool for severely emotionally abused children and to provide assessment and treatment for abused and neglected children. In addition to administrative and clinical work, Mayfield was a parent educator for the Missouri Parent's As Teachers program. She had oversight for the Teen Parent Support program, funded by Missouri Children's Trust Fund, for mentoring teenage mothers. She was the chairperson of a community task force working to prevent teen pregnancy. For nineteen years prior to her employment at BYS, Mayfield was the regional director of Community Counseling Center (CCC), whose home office is in Cape Girardeau. Community Counseling is an administrative agent of the Missouri Department of Mental Health providing behavioral health services in five counties in southeast Missouri. While at CCC, Barb implemented Families First, Family Preservation Services and Intensive In Home Services, all programs designed prevent the unnecessary out of home placement of children. She administered Children's Alternative Services to provide a complement of hard and soft services to families of children who were diagnosed with severe emotional disturbance. Mayfield chaired the ethics committee and was the corporate compliance officer. As regional director, she was responsible for all administrative and clinical operation for four of the five counties served by the organization, including eighteen distinct programs and more than seventy staff. Barb is licensed as a professional counselor (LPC) and a clinical social worker (LCSW) in Missouri. She also holds National Board for Certified Counselor (NBCC) certification. Barb says she feels blessed to have found a new home at BYS and in Marshall. "I am a "kid person' at heart.
