BYS Independent Living Program
The BYS Independent Living Program is what we call a 'contingency need program'. One or more youths may be actively enrolled in the program at any time, and at other times no youths will be participating in it. The program is activated only when a presenting youth's need and readiness necessitates it.
BYS generally serves an age group of children and adolescents who need and benefit from being part of a family home. Accordingly, the usual outcome placement objective for children completing BYS residential care or BYS day treatment is to resume full time living in their family home, or as part of a family relative home. For that reason, much of BYS planning and coordination of effort is with families of the children who are placed in our care. The children in our care generally have their sights on returning to live with their family, and we work with them toward that goal to the extent that it can be a safe and supportive environment for their return.
The Independent Living Program is designed for the older adolescent who is 'the exception' to above 'outcome goal' following BYS residential care. They require assistance to directly 'step out', and to begin living independently and responsibly in the community. For more details about this program, and about the qualities of the youth served in it, see "Children Served In Independent Living".
