Educational Services at BYS
Butterfield Youth Services works cooperatively with the Marshall Public Schools, and with other area school districts, to provide specialized education for children in the BYS School.
Marshall Public Schools is the local serving-district to the BYS Center, and accordingly the services of BYS School and those of Marshall Public Schools are fully integrated to accomodate all the children in BYS' residential care, whose attendence spans both systems.
Area School Districts may contract with BYS for Alternative School services, on an individual student's presenting need basis.
You may contact BYS education services director Susie Bishop at SusieBishop@bys-kids.org for answers to questions you may have about The BYS School.
On-grounds Alternative School
The BYS School functions as an extension of the public school system by serving learning disabled and behaviorally disabled children who are not able to attend public school full time. BYS School currently offers five full-time academic classrooms, a music class two days a week, a fully equipped family-living classroom, physical education classes, and art classes for all the children. Each BYS classroom is staffed by a certified special education teacher and two classroom aides. The BYS School provides alternative full day or partial day options, on an individual needs basis, for BYS residential and foster children.
Individualized Tutoring
In addition to the academic and social developmental services provided by Butterfield Youth Services at BYS School, The Marshall Public Schools provides supplemental (Title I supported) educational services in BYS School and after-school that are highly individualized to each student’s remedial education needs. A fully staffed Title I math classroom is provided three days each week in the BYS School, and after-school Title I supported tutoring is provided BYS resident youth at BYS School and at the Marshall High School. The cooperative relationship of Marshall Public Schools and Butterfield Youth Services is exceptionally beneficial to the youth in BYS residential care, and to the widely distributed Missouri “home school districts” from which the children come.
Academic Oversight and Planning
The academic status and individual needs of all children in care with BYS, whether attending the BYS on-grounds school or the Marshall public schools, are followed closely by the Butterfield Education department. Individualized educational assessments, monitoring of ongoing school adjustment and focused educational support services are provided.
