BYS Recreation Therapy and Services
It has been wisely said That play is the work of children.
For children at BYS, as for children everywhere, responsibility means 'learning how to satisfy one's own needs in ways that do not interfere with or violate the needs and rights of others'. A primary medium for that learning is play. Through organized play children learn cooperation, sharing and exchanging roles constructively, and exercising rules for fairness and in support of other social values. In organized recreation, skills are developed and exercised that are the building blocks for more complex and essential adult social competencies.
At BYS a full-time Recreation Therapist and a full-time Recreation Assistant are employed. Recreation services are planned and developed to fulfill each youth's need for self-expression, to acquire new skills with personal confidence, and to stimulate constructive use of leisure time as a contributing member with others.
BYS recreation services reach into:
each of the seperate living environments and group homes of BYS
the BYS Therapy Center gymnaseum and the playground resources of the BYS School, and
the Marshall community recreational resources (Marshall Parks and Recreation, Marshall YMCA, Marshall Public School recreational resources, and of course commercial recreational activities as bowling and skating).
